This series is designed to support teams bothinside and outside the ICU. Central venous catheters are increasingly being used to provide long-term venous access, leading to increased opportunity for central line associated bloodstream infections (CLA-BSI). ICU teams working on this issue have made excellent progress. They now report no infections for months or even years. The national CLA-BSI overall rate for teams reporting to Safer Healthcare Now! has dropped in half from approximately 3.0 infections per 1,000 line days to a rate of 1.5 currently. Teams continue to make inroads.
