The Strategic and Operational Directions for the Health Sector in Saskatchewan identifies a Long-Term Care Falls Prevention and Reduction Initiative aimed at reducing the number of long-term care residents who experience a fall, including affiliated and for-profit long-term care facilities through the implementation of the Safer Healthcare Now! Falls Prevention bundle. In 2010/11, Regional Health Authorities agreed upon a target of reducing the number of long-term care residents that experience a fall by 20% by March 2012. In 2011/12, Regional Health Authorities will determine a target to reduce the number of surgeries performed as a result of a long-term care resident experiencing a fall, as well as implement components of the SHN falls prevention bundle in the remaining 50% of long-term care facilities.
In order to support teams and build on what has been learned nationally the Saskatchewan Falls Collaborative ran from May 2011 to March 2012 with the aim being to reduce the incidence of falls and injury from falls by 20% in participating home care and long-term care facilities.
Safer Healthcare Now! and the Canadian Patient Safety Institute in partnership with Saskatchewan Ministry of Health and Saskatchewan Health Quality Council invited interested teams from Saskatchewan home care and long term care setting to participate in a Reducing Falls Collaborative. Participants attended three learning sessions (two virtual sessions plus one face-to-face session) over a ten-month period and are supported by faculty between sessions.
