Congratulations to the more than 800 registrants who signed up to participate in STOP! Clean Your Hands Day on May 5th -- a 30 per cent increase over last year. Our thanks to everyone who helped to share the message that optimal hand hygiene is one of the most effective ways to reduce healthcare associated infections.
The Hand Hygiene website has had more than 11,000 page views since registration for Stop! Clean Your Hands Day opened in March and more than 400 individuals have completed the online hand hygiene educational module. The Canadian Patient Safety Institute (CPSI) and Discovery Campus offer the online hand hygiene education module year-round, to help healthcare workers and volunteers improve hand hygiene. Take the module today!
Two National Calls were held on May 5th, one in French and one in English, with over 100 attendees. These calls were an excellent opportunity to be inspired by hand hygiene experts and hear more about what other organizations are doing. If you were unable to join us for our STOP! Clean Your Hands Day national call, the presentations and recordings are now available online at www.handhygiene.ca. Gather your team to learn from hand hygiene experts and what other organizations are doing to reduce the spread of healthcare associated infections!
Inspired by the “I Wanna Wash My Hands” video created by Brant Community Healthcare System, the first ever Canadian Hand Hygiene Video Competition was also launched on May 5th . The competition is an opportunity for organizations to showcase their commitment to hand hygiene excellence. The Canadian Hand Hygiene Faculty will serve as judges for the competition and a prize will be awarded to the winning organization, which will be announced during Canada’s National Forum on Patient Safety and Quality Improvement, taking place from October 31 to November 4, 2011. The deadline for submissions is August 31, 2011. Visit www.handhygiene.ca for the official submission guidelines. Get creative and showcase your commitment to hand hygiene!
Organizations are also encouraged to take the on-line Hand Hygiene Self-Assessment. This tool was developed by the World Healthcare Organization and adapted by CPSI for Canadian healthcare settings. It will allow organizations to reflect on existing resources and achievements and focus on future plans and challenges by identifying key issues requiring attention and improvement. To find out how well you are doing, take the self-assessment today!
We want to hear how your organization celebrated STOP! Clean Your Hands Day! Post your stories to www.patientsafetycrosswalk.ca or send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org so that we can profile your organization’s activities in future articles on hand hygiene. Take the time to tell us how you celebrated STOP! Clean Your Hands Day!
The Canadian Patient Safety Institute worked in collaboration with Accreditation Canada and the Community and Hospital Infection Control Association-Canada (CHICA-Canada) for the second year in a row to bring STOP! Clean Your Hands Day to Canada. This event was held in conjunction with a global initiative of the World Health Organization, “Save Lives: Clean Your Hands.”
